Organization of Learning Resources

Lesson 12

-In response to Cathy’s reflection question on Vista, I will say yes, it will be a challenge to get students to access better sites.  How will I go about this in my school?  One thing I will do is ‘talk up’ these websites.  I will take on the persona of a used car salesperson.  I will highlight the good qualities of this website and I will take students on a ‘test drive’.  I will use a Smartboard or the projector in the computer lab to ‘walk or drive’ the students through the websites.  I will highlight only a few of the main attractions of each website or I will look at one or two in-depth with them per class and then have them play around on the websites.  I may get them to answer very brief questions after looking through the websites.  I can make it a ‘race’ to see which five people finish first, or put students in pairs, or assign points to the first 10 people who finish.  By making it into a game, it might be more appealing.

-“…digital resources are becoming a fundamental component of our collections and providing easy access for students and staff to digital resources is essential” (UBC Vista).  This is so true.  More and more students are fascinated by technology and so engaged when they are on the school computers and their own devices.  I think it is easier said than done when I think about providing easy access to digital resources in my library.  From taking this course, and previous LIBE courses, and experimenting with websites and blogs, etc., I am getting closer to figuring out how to provide easy access.  It is something I have to work on.  I should also tap into the vast knowledge that the students and some of the staff have at my school about technology.  I’m sure I could learn from all their tips and digital resources and then I could use this knowledge to teach the rest of the school.
